Olifant-kenner kom gesels oor Thula Thula Wildtuin

“Ek is verantwoordelik vir die programme van die U3A (University of the Third Age) in Hermanus,” vertel Gert Claaasen. “Ons het ‘n paar jaar gelede vir Francoise Malby-Anthony genooi om as gasspreker oor hulle Thula Thula Wildtuin in KwaZulu-Natal te kom praat en die reaksie was oorweldigend.” Gert sê daar was meer as ‘n 1 000 mense in die saal en hulle moes later die deure sluit.

Francoise se eggenoot, Lawrence Anthony, het die Thula Thula Wildtuin in KwaZulu-Natal gestig. Dit het begin met ‘n verwilderde trop olifante wat totaal getraumatiseer was as gevolg van skietery onder die trop. Lawrence het hulle in ‘n kamp ingelok en toe vir dae, dag en nag, langs die draad gesit om hulle vertroue te wen. Uiteindelik het die matriarg haar slurp deur die draad in sy rigting gesteek. Net daar het ‘n ongelooflike vertrouensverhouding tussen hom en die olifante begin, met die trop wat mettertyd uitgebrei het. 

Gert sê Lawrence is later in ‘n motorongeluk in Johannesburg oorlede, terwyl Francoise by hulle huis in Thula Thula was. “Daardie nag het die hele trop olifante rondom haar huis kom staan om ‘hulde’ aan Lawrence te bring,” vertel Gert. “Francoise het besluit om voort te gaan met die wildtuin en om ook renosters te beskerm en ander beseerde diere te verpleeg.” Een van haar projekte is die blootstelling van jong kinders aan die natuur, asook opleiding wat sy aan hulle verskaf, maar Gert sê dít is bykans ‘n verhaal op sy eie. “En so gaan die verhaal voort oor ander wonderbaarlike stories van wat alles in die wildtuin afspeel,” het Gert gesê.

Die goeie nuus is dat Francoise op 29 September 2022 weer in Hermanus as gasspreker gaan kom optree. Sy sal toehoorders verder oor Thula Thula Wildtuin kom inlig, asook nuwe planne wat in die vooruitsig gestel word. Gert sê sy sal ook haar nuwe boek, ‘The Elephants of Thula Thula’ bekendstel. Gert het onderneem om vollediger inligting en foto’s nader aan die tyd aan aan Gans-Berg Nuus te verskaf.

The Overberg U3A has invited Francoise Malby-Anthony, wife of the famed “Elephant Whisperer” Lawrence Anthony, to return to Hermanus to speak about recent developments at her Thula Thula Game Reserve and her latest book, “The Elephants of Thula Thula”. She will speak at the Dutch Reform Church (NG Kerk) at Onrus on Thursday 29 September at 17:00.
