Calls for Public Comments on Hermanus Civic Precinct Plan

Overstrand Municipality encourages all interested parties to comment on the proposed Phase 2 of the Hermanus CBD Revitalisation and Regeneration on or before 21 November 2022.

The proposal for Phase 2 focuses on the ‘Civic Precinct’ that predominantly includes the civic and local authority land uses in Hermanus CBD such as the magistrate’s court, the police station, library, municipal offices and public transport and parking facilities.

The precinct ranges around the traffic circle intersection of Main Road (R43) with Royal Street and Church Street. Other intersections include the interface of Harmony Avenue with the Main Road, Magnolia Street with Royal Street and Patterson Street with Main Road.

Kindly note that the Hermanus CBD Taxi Rank is situated centrally to the precinct. The redevelopment of the taxi rank is currently in conceptual design phase and is being pursued as a separate project.

Councillor Clinton Lerm, Mayco Member of Investment and Infrastructure, explained that the report on the regeneration of Hermanus CBD makes provision for the regeneration of the CBD through six separate projects.

These projects are the upgrade of the taxi rank, the upgrade of Swallow Park, the Mitchell Square redevelopment, the pedestrianisation of High Street, the improvement of Lemm's Corner and the Old Harbour Precinct (in no specific order).

He said it is of critical importance that the Municipality invests in the public environment such as the CBD – not just in Hermanus - but across the Overstrand to boost and create a positive image and to ensure future growth and development.

“We must constantly look at where we are heading with the investment and growth of our areas to ensure that CBDs remain vibrant, safe and attractive places where locals and visitors can spend time,” Councillor Lerm added.

The proposal for the Civic Precinct is available for perusal during office hours at the offices of Hermanus Town Planning in 16 Paterson Street, and on the municipal website www.overstrand.gov.za. Click on Documents, Strategic Documents and then Hermanus CBD.

Comments and input can be forwarded to Lsmuts@overstrand.gov.za or alternatively use enquiries@overstrand.gov.za (for attention Anver Wyngaard).
