Strandveld Hiking Club - Next Hike at Fernkloof
I trust you are all well and looking forward to the next hike at Fernkloof in Hermanus!
Hermanus members - you can sleep in a little later, but Gansbaai members, you'll have to get up early! We'll meet at 08:00 at the lower parking lot (the first parking lot as you drive in). You’ll find the pin drop for the location below!
Important note on pin drops:
Please open the pin drop and study the route before you leave. If you’re heading into areas with poor phone signal or GPS coverage, you may be redirected to places that are far from your destination. If you lose signal, it can be difficult to reach someone, so plan ahead. If you're uncertain about the route, arrange to meet me or someone else along the way to guide you. We also have each other's WhatsApp for lift-sharing arrangements.
The Hike:
We’ll be walking a combination of routes for a pleasant 8.5 km hike. The footpaths are mostly single track with sand or small stones underfoot.
• Difficulty: 4/10
• Fitness level: 5/10
• Important: Some sections have steep drop-offs, particularly near old landslides. If you have concerns about heights or vertigo, feel free to take it easy, look the other way, or ask for assistance. Bring good walking shoes, hats, sunblock, snacks, and plenty of water (unless you enjoy drinking from the occasional stream - though it’s slow at the moment!).
I’ll be leading the hike and carrying the medical bag. Jill Horton, who kindly recce’d the route with me, will be there as my backup.
