Walking the Hermanus Cliff Path: A Local’s Love Letter to Nature
There’s a reason the Hermanus Cliff Path is on every local’s list of favorite places. It’s not just a walking trail - it’s a 12-kilometer love letter to the sea, the land, and everything in between.
If you're thinking about visiting Hermanus, or even if you’ve been here a dozen times, this trail has a way of showing you something new. Every turn brings a fresh perspective. A sudden stretch of wild fynbos. A crashing wave. A sunlit patch of proteas blooming in defiance of the wind.
And it’s free. Wildly, unreasonably free - in the best way. Let’s walk it together.
Where Is Hermanus, Exactly?
Hermanus is a coastal town about 90 minutes southeast of Cape Town. Wedged between mountain and sea, it’s best known for two things: whales and wild beauty.
It’s small enough to feel personal, but it doesn’t sleep through the seasons. There's always something going on - especially in nature.
Hermanus draws everyone from hikers and surfers to artists and interior designers. (It’s where we design every custom printed cushion cover and wallpaper mural at Lily Grace Design - because the landscape really is that inspiring.)
The Cliff Path: 12 Kilometers of Bliss
The path starts at the New Harbour and runs all the way to Grotto Beach. You can walk as little or as much of it as you like. The full trail is around 12 km, hugging the edge of the cliffs with views that stop you in your tracks.
There’s something meditative about it. You don’t need to be super fit - it's more of a long meander than a hike - but if you do the full stretch, you’ll feel it (in the best way).
You’ll pass through shaded patches of milkwood trees, sandy coves, benches worn smooth by salt air, and panoramic sea views that make you forget about your phone.
There are a few cafés and bathroom stops if you plan ahead - and plenty of spots to unpack a light picnic. A soft fleece blanket and a few snacks? You’re sorted.

Hermanus Weather: What to Expect
Hermanus doesn’t do extremes. Summers are breezy and warm - perfect for walks, swims, and long evenings outdoors. Winters are cool and fresh, often with dramatic skies that light up the sea in silver and steel-blue.
The best time to walk the Cliff Path? Early mornings in summer or sunny days in winter. And in spring, of course, when the wildflowers and proteas start showing off.
Whale season runs from June to November - and the Cliff Path becomes front-row seating to the Southern Right Whale migration. Some locals skip work for the show. We don’t blame them.
Proteas, Fynbos, and a Crash Course in Local Flora
This trail is also a deep dive into South Africa’s indigenous plant life. Fynbos is everywhere - you’ll spot pincushions, ericas, and restios along the route. But it’s the King Protea that usually steals the show.
They grow along the slopes and cliffs, bold and upright against the sea spray. That raw, native beauty inspired our own Protea Collection, where we print protea artwork on fabric and home décor pieces - including cushion covers and fleece throws.
You’ll also spot a few wild herbs and shrubs if you pay attention. Some locals still pick them for cooking and remedies. Don’t pick unless you know - but do take in the scent of wild rosemary on the breeze. It’s unforgettable.
Beaches Along the Way
The Cliff Path isn’t just cliffs. It threads together some of the most photogenic beaches in Hermanus.
Langbaai - A local secret. Small, quiet, with gentle waves and rock pools.
Voëlklip Beach - Where surfers meet sunbathers.
Grotto Beach - The end of the trail, and the beginning of soft sand for kilometers.
Bring a towel. Bring a swimsuit. Even in winter, a quick dip in the icy Atlantic can change your whole mood.
Birdlife, Dassies, and Surprises
Look up. Sunbirds dart between aloe blooms. Egyptian geese honk from hidden corners. You might even spot a rock kestrel or two.
And then, there are the dassies - those fuzzy little mammals you’ll see lounging on the rocks. They look like fat guinea pigs, but they’re actually related to elephants. Nature has a sense of humor.
Photo Tips: Where the Cliff Path Gets Dramatic
Bring your camera or phone - but honestly, the light does most of the work for you.
Here are a few local favorites:
Kraal Rock at sunrise
The view just before Voëlklip Beach
The wooden benches along Hoy’s Koppie lookout

Many locals take home a photo or two and later recreate the feel through interior décor. Our wallpaper murals often start with a photograph or sketch taken on this very path.

Best Time of Year to Visit the Cliff Path
Spring (Sept–Nov): Wildflowers. Whale watching. Warm days.
Summer (Dec–Feb): Early morning walks, followed by swims.
Autumn (Mar–May): Less crowded, cooler, ideal for photographers.
Winter (Jun–Aug): Moody skies and whale season in full swing.
Each season has its magic. Even rain adds something - the sea turns wild, the trail smells of damp earth and salt, and you’ll often have it all to yourself.
Where to Start and Park
There are multiple entry points:
New Harbour - Good for a full walk.
Gearings Point - Central and scenic.
Voëlklip Beach or Grotto - Start from the other end.
All have nearby parking. Just be respectful of residents, and keep it clean.
Is It Accessible?
Some sections are paved and flat, especially near the town center. Others are a bit rocky and uneven. Families with small kids will enjoy the shorter sections near Gearings Point.
If you’re packing a picnic or walking with older visitors, the midsection from Kraal Rock to Kwaaiwater is manageable and rewarding.

A Local Tip: What to Bring
A lightweight jacket (the wind is real)
Sun protection
Good walking shoes or sandals
A camera
A bottle of water
A fleece blanket for impromptu stops
A book, if you find the right bench
If you’re staying in an Airbnb or guesthouse, consider asking them to include local touches - like printed cushion covers or simple throws. We work with several hosts in Hermanus to create decor that reflects the natural beauty outside their doors. You’ll spot pieces from our Sufficient Grace Collection in more places than you’d expect.
Final Thought
Some trails are nice to walk once. The Hermanus Cliff Path? It calls you back.
Maybe it’s the whales. Maybe it’s the fynbos. Or maybe it’s the way the sea talks to the rocks and you feel like you’re part of the conversation.
If you walk it, walk slowly. Watch closely. And take something of it home - even if it’s just in your memory.
Or maybe… in your decor.
