March For The Penguins - Virtual And Global

The year 2020 has zoomed in and virtually changed our world. With due concern for the coronavirus pandemic, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary’s fourth annual 5km March for the Penguins will now be VIRTUAL.

Be part of the movement - 21 December 2020 to 5 January 2021

How to join the March

Register on our March for the Penguins, RaceOne Page.

Download the RaceOne App on your phone and start your March. Easy peasy step by step help. The RaceOne App allows you to share your photos and plot your penguin shaped run.

Waddle, walk, wander or run but have FUN.

  • Dress up in your best black & white penguin impression, and perhaps plot your run in the shape of a penguin.
  • Share your experience, cheer your friends on, challenge your family.
  • Take your dog with on the walk.

Your fun experience and participation will help us to care for our penguin patients - every extra penny we raise will help us to make a difference. The 5km event will be open from 21st December to the 5th of January. Locals are welcome to walk the route they have come to enjoy over the last four years. Remember #EveryPenguinCounts

The community event aims to create awareness of the endangered status of the African penguin, as well as raise funds for the rehabilitation efforts of the team at the APSS. Now that the March for the Penguins is virtual, we hope the whole world will join us in making this the biggest March for Penguins ever.

In 2015, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust built the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS), a world-class seabird sanctuary in Gansbaai. APSS has been set up to assist the endangered African penguin colonies of Dyer Island, an Important Bird Area. From a population of over a million in the 1920s to only 13 300 breeding pairs left in South Africa, the African penguin could be extinct in the wild within the next ten years. As an indicator species, this devastating loss reminds us of the fragility of our environment.

If you are lucky enough to be in the Overstrand area, please visit the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, open every day from 9am to 4pm with no entrance fee. The onsite curio and coffee shop help support the fundraising model so your support is invaluable. Feeding time is at 3 pm and can be observed through the one way glass or on the drop down screen. Arrive a bit earlier to watch the birds waddle over for feeding and see their pre and post swim. Enjoy some delicious cake while you wait.
Please note that due to the current pandemic we will be restricting numbers as and when required, and ask that all please wear their masks, sanitise on entry and provide contact tracing information.
