Wine Farm Restaurants in Hermanus

On the West Coast of South Africa, in a beautiful region called the Cape Overberg, lies a once quiet fisherman’s town called Hermanus. This late 19th century town has developed into a renowned tourist destination over time. While this is in part on account of the abundance of whales that can be observed right from the town’s waterfront, it’s also become a gateway into the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley vineyards – some of the oldest planted in the Western Cape.

If you’re fortunate enough to stop in at some of these renowned wine farms don’t hesitate to sample their wares and even stay for lunch or a sunset dinner. Wine and whales, it really doesn’t get much better than that. You can even consider a guided tour through the Hermanus Wine Route which is a remarkable experience for wine lovers of all palates. When you do eventually start feeling a little hungry, you’ll be able to order award-winning food and bottles alike from many of the wine farm restaurants in the region.

Exploring Hermanus itself is also a real treat. This bustling yet still charming seaside town is the ideal place to get lost for just a little while if you’re making your way down towards the Garden Route and beyond. It offers a wide variety of quaint little restaurants, supermarkets, coffee shops and snack bars to sample treats and stock up on necessities. There are several other activities and marvels to discover while you’re in the area too. The entire region is situated within the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of only six Floral Kingdoms worldwide. You will encounter an amazing variety of plants, like the indigenous and rare fynbos as well as wildlife in all shapes and sizes in this part of the Overberg. It’s hard not to be snapping photos all day long.

After wine tasting and lunch, what better activity to do than to go on a healthy hike in this amazing wilderness? You can take it slow or even do some adventure activities with the whole family along, like mountain or quad biking. And with all the extra exercise and sunshine, you can feel guilt-free about indulging in a fine vintage at one of the exceptional wine estate restaurants near Hermanus for dinner too. You’ll enjoy good food, good wine, amazing wildlife and beautiful scenery. And the best news is all of this can be found in and around Hermanus, only a few hours away from Cape Town. What’s not to love?
