Fishing in Hermanus

Hermanus has some incredible fishing spots that are highly acclaimed by those in the know. From the bounty of  the sea to the yields from the calmer lagoon or even the catch from nearby flowing rivers and dams, this bustling settlement in the Cape Overberg is rich with fishing opportunities. However, it’s important to ensure that you have all the necessary permits and equipment before heading out. The community in this region takes nature conservation and having respect for the environment very seriously. This ensures that everyone can enjoy the majestic mountainsides blanketed in fynbos and the diverse marine life here for many generations to come.

If you’re travelling along the Overberg coastline and find yourself in Hermanus there are plenty of reasons to put on your fishing gear, pick up your permit and decide on the best spot to cast your line. Defnitely take the chance to explore the rocky coastline and the long sandy stretch of beach known as Die Plaat, it’s renowned for giving rock and surf anglers the option to catch Galjoen, Steenbras and Cob in season. It’s also important to note that the Walker Bay Fishing Trail is the best way to access these special fishing spots on Die Plaat this is because vehicles are no longer allowed to drive on the beach.

Top fishing spots along the Hermanus Cliff Path are at Die Gang and Siever’s Punt, but you will find fishermen trying their luck all the way along the rocks from Kraal Rock to Grotto Beach. Deep-sea fishermen will be in their element as there are several boats that set out from the slipway in the New Harbour in search of Cape Salmon, Cob, Snoek and crayfish in season. Charters can be arranged and the boats are fully equipped, going as far as Cape Point in search of tunny if required. All fishing equipment and bait is usually provided for and after each fishing expedition you’ll be able to enjoy a drink at the clubhouse as well as possibly even braai your catch.

The Klein River lagoon and estuary also offers the opportunity to catch Elf, Garrick, Steenbras and Sob while slipways are found at Prawn Flats and Maanskynbaai. Flyfishing is also popular in the farm dams up the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley where Trout, Carp and Bass can be caught in the most magnificent surroundings. So why not put your technique to good use in Hermanus as you try to catch the biggest or quickest fish in the water!
