7 July 2023: Informal Piggery at Besemhoutskloof Farm
Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, the Municipal Manager and Law Enforcement (LE) as well as the Stock Theft Unit of the SAPS met with the relevant small farmers on Wednesday, 5 July 2023, following a number of complaints from surrounding farmers about the pigs on the municipal farm.
This long outstanding matter needs new energy to address it positively.
It was agreed that the pigs be relocated to another suitable area, possibly Karwyderskraal. Mayor Rabie appointed Cllr Steven Fourie to lead a team that will work on the identification of alternative land, oversee the signing of a lease agreement and the relocation of the pigs.
Until the relocation is finalised, LE will ensure that any pigs that are not kept in a pen be confiscated. They will work closely with the small farmers to ensure the safety of the animals as well as the motorists on the R320 where a number of free roaming pigs have been spotted lately.
It was further noted that roaming pigs not belonging to the Besemhoutskloof farmers were also spotted. LE will investigate this and address the owners accordingly.
It is trusted that this effort, spearheaded from the office of the Mayor under the leadership of Cllr Fourie, will produce an amenable outcome for the benefit of all stakeholders.
