Panthera Africa Recovery Update: Rebuilding After the Wildfire

Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary has shared an important update following the devastating wildfire in January 2026.

While the damage to the sanctuary was significant, the priority has always remained the same, the safety and well-being of the animals. Thanks to incredible teamwork and support, most animals were safely evacuated, and those needing critical care have since returned and are recovering.

However, the impact has been far-reaching:

• The sanctuary remains closed (expected until at least August 2026)
• Major income streams have been lost
• Ongoing care costs remain high
• Rebuilding and recovery efforts are extensive

Despite this, progress is being made every day, from repairing enclosures and restoring infrastructure to preparing safe spaces for the animals’ continued recovery.

Current urgent needs include:

• Grass planting for enclosures (before May deadline)
• Batteries for electric fencing systems
• Rebuilding big cat night houses
• Upgrading water systems and fire prevention measures

Every bit of support makes a real difference, helping ensure these animals continue to receive the care, safety, and protection they deserve.
