Ultimately, everything comes back to the soil!

In 2018, I started exploring the various vineyard sites in the maritime region of Walker Bay. I wanted to find vineyards uniquely adapted to their soil and environment. First, I wanted to find balance in the vineyard; a site that is naturally healthy, with moderate vegetative growth and small, concentrated berries. Only once you have a healthy vineyard producing good fruit, can you think of making a high-quality and delicious wine.

These are limestone rocks that make up 1/3 of both the Journey Blanc Fume and the Hinterlands Syrah vineyards. In each wine, the limestone lends an oceanic, savoury element and maintains natural acidity in the wines. I call it my secret weapon soil as it is incredibly rare in the Cape.
