The Houses of Dyer Island

The Houses of Dyer Island

Marine Dynamics Whale Tours

Originally, the houses were used as a station to club seals until the island was identified as a guano harvesting hotspot. For many years, the droppings of our birds were harvested from here to be used as a fertilizer before the practice ceased in the 1970’s.

Today, these houses are occupied by rangers who are there to insure that our birds stay in tip top shape. Should they find any birds in need of a little help, the birds are collected and sent to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary - APSS
