I discussed our heart boxes last time. How about giving your other half the big box with the smaller box inside of it.
Fill the gap with toffees, chocolates or whatever treats.
Inside the smaller box put the real gift, also wrapped it up - an invitation to dinner, a bracelet - you know what will be popular. It would probably look even nicer if you bought some ribbon to further dress the box.
You'll get full marks for originality and without more trouble than it takes to email us or phone - and you get to eat the rest of the toffees while you are assembling your gift.
