NO FIREWORKS
Overstrand Municipality would like to remind residents and holiday-makers once again that the discharge of fireworks is not permitted at any time (including New Year’s Eve) in the Overstrand region.
Fireworks, fire crackers, flares and paper lanterns are considered a major fire risk and are not allowed on beaches or in any public space. Flares are only permitted from vessels at sea in the event of an emergency.
The selling of fireworks is also illegal without a permit issued by the South African Police Services (SAPS).
The Explosives Act that regulates selling of fireworks, is enforced by SAPS and shops purported to be selling illegal fireworks can be assured that law enforcement agencies will take action against any person who acts irresponsibly and outside the prescribed legislation.
Please report any offences to your nearest SAPS station. The telephone numbers are Hermanus Police 028 313 5300, Gansbaai Police 028 384 0201, Stanford Police 028 341 0601, Kleinmond Police 028 271 8200.
Be fire wise
Yes, it is fire season in the Western Cape and residents are urged to be fire wise. While fireworks, and paper lanterns are highlighted, the appeal is for responsible, fire wise action throughout.
Take the utmost care when using products to start or ignite a braai fire and make sure to extinguish them once finished. Never leave a fire unattended.
Always keep emergency numbers close by and educate your children on the dangers of fire.
