Wheelchairs Gift Brings Joy
EasyPay changed the lives of many Overstrand families with the donation of eight brand-new wheelchairs to members of the Overstrand Association for Persons with Disabilities (OAPD) in Hawston, Zwelihle and Kleinmond on 17 October 2022.
An additional four wheelchairs were handed over to the Hermanus Community Day Centre (CDC) where they will be utilised by the elderly and the disabled who visit the clinic daily.
Sr Heather Kinnear, operational manager of the Hermanus CDC said the clinic always needs wheelchairs to transport people in and around the building. “Our patients and porters will be very happy to have four new ones to use,” she added.
At the handover Overberg District Municipality Councillor and programme director, Archie Klaas, said only a minority of those in need of wheelchairs have access to them. “We know that wheelchairs are scarce and people can’t always afford to buy them, so we are grateful for this donation.” He also thanked the Overstrand Municipality’s Thusong Service Centre for facilitating the process.
In her speech at the handover, Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, expressed great pleasure in knowing that these wheelchairs will allow somebody to move more freely and be mobile and less dependable on somebody else.
She acknowledged the donation made by EasyPay and thanked the OAPD for their great work they are doing for residents.
“It is wonderful to give people a chance to move out of their houses or beds, out of their immobility and experience the world, because your mind is not captured in a wheelchair,” she said.
