Rumour has it that it was once said that “so high are the hills, which closely embrace the valley all around, that they seem to touch the sky and you cannot see anything but Heaven and Earth”. This anecdote gave birth to the name Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, which so aptly captures the serene beauty and ethereal landscapes of the area.
The winding R320 that snakes through the valley is dotted with wine farms that produce world-class wines. Well known for being a cool climate wine region due to the proximity to the maritime breeze emitted from the Atlantic Ocean, the area benefits from the high elevation and cool sea breezes. Not to mention the unique terroir that embodies all the wines and has resulted in many local and international awards for the wines produced.
The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is one of the only wine routes in South Africa where each farm began with the sole purpose of producing wine. With this vision in mind every viticulturist has poured their passion into producing small volumes of unwavering premium quality wines. The route now boasts world-renowned Pinot Noir and Chardonnary with some of South Africa’s best Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and innovative blends.
