Foster Care House Needed
Many of our Hermanus children find themselves in terrifying circumstances, needing emergency help. HCFS’s first response is to try and find solutions to the problems in the child’s circumstances. However, in cases of severe neglect or abuse, we cannot avoid removing a child from their home environment. We often place such children with foster parents; we currently have about 250 children in such care. In cases where this is not possible, group care is the next best solution.
A cluster foster care scheme allows children to be taken into foster care in a group setting that avoids the feeling of an impersonal institution. In each house cluster, a house-mother sees to the needs of six children. The goals of such a scheme are to protect and nurture children by providing a safe, healthy environment with positive support. We work hard to give each child a sense of stability and permanence by trying to reunite the family, or by enabling the child to enjoy a lifelong, nurturing relationship as part of another family.
Each house houses 6 children who are cared for by a foster mother.
There is an urgent need to accommodate the growing number of children in desperate need of such care. For several it is a matter of life and death. Because of the rampant poverty and social decay in the Zwelihle/Mount Pleasant area, the trickle has become a torrent.
