Outdoor Adventures in Hermanus
HERMANUS HAS ADVENTURES ON LAND, SEA AND IN THE AIR
Adventure seekers have the biggest range of outdoor activities to choose from in Hermanus thanks to the geology of the town. Mountains, rivers, lagoons, sea and forests provide a playground for adventurers of every description.
Sea kayaking trips from the Old Harbour are available year round and during the whale watching season this must be the most exciting way to spot a Southern Right Whale. From snorkelling to scuba diving and spear fishing, the underwater landscape offers a whole new world of adventure. Nearby Gansbaai offers an adventure of a lifetime with shark cage diving trips running all year round. The beaches provide excellent wind surfing, surfing, body boarding and swimming with special areas dedicated to each, just ask a local. Sailing and kite sailing are also growing in popularity. For a freshwater experience the Klein River lagoon offers wind surfing, canoeing, sailing and water skiing.
The mountains bordering the length of Hermanus are ideal for quad biking, with trails through the vineyards and forests offering spectacular views. Tucked away in the forest adventurers can test their aiming skills with paintball and brave heights during tree-top canopy tours. There are excellent mountain bike trails through the nature reserve and vineyards and several mountain bike races throughout the year. The sky above Hermanus is often dotted with parachute canopies when paragliders take off from the top of the mountain and soar through the air. Abseiling is periodically offered down the cliffs in the centre of town but challenging climbing and hiking are always available in the mountains.
These adventures are available from a variety of adventure companies who usually specialise in a selection of activities. Otherwise you can always ask the locals for some “inside” tips for the best spots. Get your heart pumping and feel the wind through your hair as you dive into any one of these thrilling adventures.
