We Need Your Help - Request For Laptops

Food 4 Thought

Technology makes the world a new place.

What we are about:

Funimfundo is an early childhood development (ECD) school for children aged 3 to 6 years old. Its language of tuition is Isi-Xhosa and we encourage the use of English as a second language. We are based in Die Kop, a small Ama-Xhosa settlement on the outskirts of Stanford, Western Cape. Every year nearly 60 children attend the school and they are looked after and taught by three trained teachers. They are also fed two main meals and three snacks by our cook.

What is the problem?

There are currently two laptops that are used by the administration team of the school. They are ten years old, are slow to run and often will not even start up. The batteries have failed meaning they only work when permanently plugged into a power supply.

The School Principal does not have a laptop – and yet she needs one to allow her to complete some of the Department of Education administration tasks expected of the head of a school – as these now have to be done online.

In addition, our teachers also have limited opportunity to learn and develop their own digital literacy skills. This holds them back significantly as we now live in the digital age and you are not part of today’s world if you cannot operate a computer.

Why these laptops would help?

Three new laptops will ensure that the everyday administration of the school will continue to deliver on its administrative obligations – this includes record-keeping, bookkeeping, communications etc. etc.

In addition, having a laptop in the school itself will allow the Head Teacher to:

  • Do more of the administration herself
  • Build her digital literacy skills, those of her teachers and this would filter down to the children.

Costs
The price of laptops can vary immensely. However, R14,000 should be able to buy the school three good quality laptops, with the latest Microsoft software and Office installed.

In summary

Funimfundo Pre-school requests a donation of three ‘future-proofing’ laptops to support the work that it does. For more information please contact Food 4 Thought today.
