Grade 1 Learners School Clothes & Supplies
Sue Harris, the school's American benefactor, donated R1 4055 - to make sure to cover everything our grade 1 learners need for school and in this way helped Zaan ensure they arrive confident and happy, knowing they are dressed like everyone else and with everything they need in their backpacks.
What a difference it makes to a child to know that and how much the school, backed by its supporters, has done to have the Pikkewyntjies arrive at the school gate, with all the necessary skills, expecting to enjoy learning as they have always done and confident of success.
For most of their parents and certainly their grandparents, school was tormenting from the first moment of the first day. They were a target of teasing for being in the wrong clothes and unprepared as they were, they had no idea what to expect or the least understanding of what they were told to do, nor was there anyone at home who could help them because they weren't sure either. It was cruel although no one meant to be cruel but it's really, really good that doesn't happen anymore.
As a volunteer, I would like to congratulate the handful of women who have worked over the years with such dedication and care to make this turnaround possible. It strikes one all over again every time the new school year starts.
I would also like to thank Sue, for recognising the school's value, in providing Early Childhood Education for children who would otherwise not have it, but also for the positive role the school plays in the community. Without Sue's awareness and her beneficent donation, I wonder where the money for uniforms this year would have been found?
