Pikkewyntjies Shapes - This is a square

For a small person, the difference between a square and a rectangle is difficult to describe or even perhaps to see, without knowing the names of the respective shapes and handling them.

Given how many other shapes there are, all with their own names and properties, time needs to be given to each of the shapes to highlight the differences and make them useful tools for our Pikkewyntjies.

This particular morning, the look and use of a SQUARE was being investigated and the children, after rolling and cutting their squares, used them to build a picture.

It’s always interesting to see what each one decides to do. The attractive boards between the children on their tables serve as a covid precaution measure now but they also serve their original purpose which was to help the less confident children to be brave enough to have their own ideas and make their own designs.

Too often they would look at their table partner’s picture and doubt whether theirs was good enough. Very often they would change theirs to be the same as their neighbour’s. This is not what Zaan and her teachers want for their Pikkewyntjies. They want them to believe in themselves, so they are not afraid to experiment and learn from mistakes and become the best version of themselves using their own skills and abilities.

Here are some square pictures.
