Fernkloof Nature Reserve History

Here’s some interesting history about Fernkloof in Hermanus.

This special nature reserve was established in the early 1900s to protect the area’s incredible plant life. At the time, it was much smaller than it is today, covering only about 100 hectares. It has since expanded into the nearly 2,000-hectare reserve we know now, stretching across mountain and coastal fynbos along parts of the Kleinrivier range, with much of the scenic cliff path forming its boundary.

Over the years, conservation efforts helped shape the reserve into an important natural space for the community, protecting biodiversity while also creating opportunities for people to enjoy the trails, views, and unique plant life that make Fernkloof so special.

Today, you can explore more than 60km of trails, visit the internationally recognised herbarium, and enjoy the stunning 11km cliff path along the coastline.

Fernkloof is a reminder of what can happen when people care about protecting the places they love. Next time you’re in Hermanus, take a slow walk and enjoy the history and nature all around you.
