With the end of the year creeping closer, it draws us closer to that time of the year when you start thinking about the year gone by. Did you challenge yourself to do something daring, did you succeed in your job, did you tell that someone special how you feel?
As the saying goes, You can never know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been. Being creatures of habit, we often repeat history. And so we take a look back at what happened in history on this very day: 18 November.
One the most well-known stories of history occurred on this seemingly average day. On this very day in 1307, William Tell shot the apple of his sons’ head and Paris’ most famous museum the Louvre officially opens in 1793. As far as independence and politics go, this was in deed a momentous day as France and Austria sign peace in 1738, Netherlands and Belgium sign Treaty of Zonhoven in 1833, Albania declares independence from Turkey in 1912 and Morocco gains independence in 1956. Today is also the day the Antacrtica was discovered by US Navy Captain Nathaniel B Palmer in 1820.
If you are lucky to celebrate your birthday today, you share this celebration with English dramatist of Gilbert & Sullivan, William Schwenck Gilbert (1836), the first US astronaut and second man in space, Alan Shepard (1923), famous actor and comedian, Owen Wilson (1968), English pop singer, Kim Wilde (1960) and believe it or not, Mickey Mouse (1928)!
