The Weekend To-Do List When You Are In Gansbaai!

Holte vir die Voet Akkommodasie is the perfect home-from-home when you want affordable holiday accommodation in Gansbaai. The double-story house in Middlekusweg sleeps ten and is perfect for family getaways and groups of friends wanting a relaxing time away from the city.

These Are A Few Of Our Favourite Things…

The home’s owners love directing guests to their favourite beaches, hiking trails, restaurants, coffee shops and outdoor activities:

Gansbaai Beaches

Whether you are looking for a family-friendly spot to spend a day at the ocean or a secluded stretch of coastline, Gansbaai’s beaches have it all.

The Gansbaai tidal pool is within walking distance from Holte vir die Voet Akkommodasie, and Stanford’s Cove is just a short hike away.

Other spots loved by locals and holidaymakers alike are the cove below the long-gone De Kelders Hotel, Skulpiesbaai, the tidal pool at Kleinbaai and the lagoon at Uilenkraalsmond.

Hiking Trails

If you enjoy exploring on foot, you are in for a treat. Gansbaai is adorned with stunning hiking trails. Pack a small backpack with water and a snack, and go on short unguided walks along the coastline. If you are a more serious hiker, sign up for guided hiking tours that will take you across protected conservation areas and nature reserves.

Whichever you choose, you will be treated to scenery like you have never seen before. Set in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, your steps will weave their way through indigenous fynbos that attracts a myriad of bird species. You might also come across the remains of kitchen middens, a reminder that primitive man also loved spending time in Gansbaai.

If you visit between June to December, keep an eye out for southern right whales while you are walking along the coast. These magnificent creatures will stop you in your tracks, and put the Cirque du Soleil to shame, as they breach their heavy girths right out of the water, as if they were as light as tiny acrobats.

Restaurants & Coffee Shops

When it comes to delicious food and good coffee, Gansbaai shines.

The town has a great selection of restaurants and coffee shops that serve everything from freshly baked cakes to ocean-fresh seafood! Guest favourites include:

• Coffee on the Rocks (De Kelders) - best view of Walker Bay

• Gansbaai Coffee Company (Gansbaai) - award-winning coffee

• Blue Goose (Gansbaai) - a casual dining experience in an elegant setting

• Rosemary’s Country Kitchen - flavours of the Strandveld with a lush sheltered garden

• Great White House in Kleinbaai - a flavourful experience

Crocodile Cage Diving

If you are looking for something to do that is a little different from the norm, how about cage diving with Nile crocodiles at Afrikanos, near Danger Point?

Afrikanos offers you the chance to take a closer look at these giant reptiles that date back to prehistoric times. If cage diving with crocodiles is not for you, you can take a look at them from a viewing platform above the enclosure. There is also a window below ground level that offers an interesting glimpse into their murky pool.

After all the excitement, relax at the vibey restaurant and bar while you plan more adventures to keep you busy during your stay in Gansbaai.

African Penguin & Sea Bird Sanctuary

African penguins! Who can resist these cute little tuxedo-clad cutie-pies?

The non-profit organisation Dyer Island Conservation Trust loves them so much, that they established the endangered sea birds’ official headquarters in Kleinbaai, which is a few minutes' drive from Gansbaai.

The sanctuary is open from 09:00 to 16:00 each day, with a feeding time that can be viewed at 15:00.

Wine Tasting

It’s not all about working up a sweat while you explore Gansbaai and all it has to offer.

The Overberg is known around the world for its award-winning wine estates so if you love wine, you have come to the right place.

Why not call a taxi, sit back and relax while you are driven from wine farm to wine farm on a wine-tasting adventure? Many of the estates have restaurants, so you can time your trip to coincide with lunchtime. Otherwise, order a platter and spend the afternoon catching up on long-overdue conversations with your friends. Don’t forget to stock up on a few bottles of Merlot and Sauvignon for your collection.

The owners of your accommodation suggest you try the Stanford wine route or make your way towards Cape Agulhas. If you choose the latter, you can pop in at Lomond Wine Estate and Black Oystercatcher on the way!
