Views and Sunsets

A joy forever to remember!

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. One of these evergreen joys that mankind will never tire of, is the brilliance of the sun that revitalises and brings life and beauty - even when it goes to sleep! There is a special magic about sunsets that inspires and awes humankind – as if nature’s bold display of supreme mastery strikes a secret chord within our inner being.

The Gansbaai area features some magnificent viewing spots to celebrate the sun's cheerful departure into the depths of the sea in Walker Bay. The diversity of the sunsets that constantly transform this bay into a different and ever-changing palet of colour play is simply mesmerising. On foggy days, the sea and sky are turned into a live canvass of fiery red, purple and orange splashes as if the sun is playing paintball on an infinite landscape. Sunny days are bid farewell with more gradual, gentle strokes of pastel pinks, blues and yellows. When clouds partake in the joyful fire dance, it often culminates in a crescendo of blinding brilliance as if the rays are setting the clouds alight before they all dive into a flaming ocean. Every day yields a new and unique live show never to be repeated.

Some people travel the globe to find the best sunset settings and view points – whether it is in deserts, mountains or along sea landscapes. The best places to witness these colour extravaganzas in Gansbaai are from the heights of the Duynefontein mountains, Die Plaat beach in Walker Bay or from the rocks or other vantage points in De Kelders.

Die Plaat

Flanked by a rocky, fynbos-clad coastline to the west and an infinite white sand beach to the east, the Walker Bay Nature Reserve provides a stunning location for sunset walks, horse riding and picnics. Pack a picnic basket, pop a cork and toast life’s magic while the sun kisses a blushing sea goodnight. What can be a more perfect ending to a day in paradise?

Duynefontein Mountains

Several trails for hiking, horse riding and 4x4 trips meander through fynbos fields and Milkwood forests to the top of the mountain. The panoramic views from here are always spectacular, but a sunset view is a sight to behold! Or enjoy a sundowner and dinner at one of the mountain resorts or reserves overlooking the bay for a truly unforgettable sunset scenario.

De Kelders

The coastal footpaths and rocky outcrops in De Kelders provide superb settings for sunset-lovers. Many guesthouses and a restaurant or two also provide breathtaking views of Walker Bay up to Hermanus.

To watch the silhouettes of fishing boats bobbing on the horison whilst nature cast her magic wand over sand, sea, skies and mountains beats any live performance man can ever attempt.

Come and join the magic!
