11 Fun Facts about Caledon

Heading to or from Cape Town via the N2, you will pass the serene looking town of Caledon. But don’t be fooled, this town is bustling with activity and is in fact known as the Capital of the Overberg. Here are a few other things you might not know about Caledon:

  1. Caledon is home to natural hot springs of various temperatures along the slopes of the Swartberg.
  2. The town was originally named Swartberg.
  3. Due to the popularity of the hot springs, a bath house was eventually built in 1797.
  4. It was later renamed in honour of the first British governor of the Cape, the Earl of Caledon.
  5. The historical Caldeon Wild Flower Garden was established in 1927.
  6. The area is well-known today for grain production, stock farming and wool production.
  7. Caledon is home to some of the best paintball fields in South Africa.
  8. Just outside the town you can enjoy a ziplining canopy tour or visit the air rifle and archery range.
  9. The Cape Railway Line reached Caledon in 1902 which caused a rapid influx of people into the town.
  10. The Caledon Dutch Reformed congregation dates from 1811 and is the 8th oldest in South Africa.
  11. The Caledon Museum was built in 1917.
