The Birkenhead Animal Rescue Centre (BARC) begins the year focused on continuing its mission to rescue animals and support local communities. They express gratitude to supporters who help provide care, food, and shelter to animals in need.

Urgent Need: Rescue Vehicle

BARC urgently needs a reliable vehicle (bakkie) to reach animals across remote areas from Stanford to Pearly Beach. Their current vehicle is no longer reliable, and only one field worker supports over 2000 families. A dependable vehicle is critical for saving lives. They are fundraising through BackaBuddy and encourage both once-off and monthly donations. The back-a-buddy link to donate can be found here.

Charity Shop Support

BARC’s charity shop plays an important role in funding their work. They accept donations such as clothing, furniture, and household items. The shop is open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:00 and Saturday from 08:30 to 13:00. It is located at the C-Sig building on the corner of Dirkie Uys and Market Street.

Community Events and Highlights

The Adoption Day held in February 2026 was a success, with strong community turnout, donations, and adoptions. The 2025 Golf Day also raised important funds and awareness for animal care. Upcoming events in 2026 include the Shake-a-tin on 28 March and the Golf Day on 5 December.

Easy Way to Support

Through the MySchool program, supporters can raise funds for BARC by shopping and swiping a card, with a percentage of purchases donated to the organisation.

Appreciation and Community Spirit

BARC thanks donors, partners such as Pet Grocer customers, and volunteers for their ongoing support. Community events like the Valentine’s Walk show strong local involvement.

Tribute

A tribute is paid to René Jacobs, a long-time charity shop worker remembered for her dedication, kindness, and contribution over more than 16 years.

Overall Message

BARC continues to make a meaningful difference despite limited resources. Community support remains essential to help rescue animals, provide medical care, and find them loving homes.
