Cape Leopards of the Overberg

Join us for our next Sundowner Session on 28 May 2026 with Mike Fabricius, which is focused on the Secrets of Leopards in the Overberg. Mike has spent much of his career in conservation in the Walker Bay region. He is passionate about fynbos, fire and most specifically the leopards of the Cape. Mike will share stories from his work monitoring these elusive animals with the help of wildlife cameras and tracking support of his trained border collie, Monks. RSVP with penelope@grootbosfoundation.org or phil@grootbosfoundation.orgTickets: R100 donation. 100% of proceeds go towards Grootbos Foundation programmes.

A Cape Leopard Trust survey is underway with the support of the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy and the Grootbos Reserve team that manages 13 sites of the Overberg Leopard Survey. This is a replication survey for comparison purposes of the 2021 survey. Paired camera trap stations are set up at shin height to simultaneously capture left and right flanks of the leopard's unique palage markings for ID purposes. Join our Grootbos Foundation Sunset Session talk in two weeks to learn more secrets of the leopards of the Overberg - a presentation by Mike Fabricius.

Tracks like this make our souls soar as they remind us that we live in a place still wild enough to also be home to Cape leopards.
