White Milkwood Tree DNA Project at Grootbos

Research news: 1KSA/Diplomics visited Grootbos this week to showcase the white Milkwood tree. This species has been nominated and the full genome sequenced (all its DNA) as part of a national initiative to sequence 1'000 South African species! This is a very important project and use of technology to understand and protect the genetic diversity of our country's natural heritage. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is proud to be the place where this particular species is showcased in the project. Read more about the 1KSA project on the website 1ksa.org.za

Dr Shane Murray (on the top left and again on the bottom), co-ordinator of 1KSA, was very happy to see Grootbos as the marked host of the nominated white milkwood tree for the project. Grootbos Foundation's research team were delighted to be able to discuss the 1KSA project with her. This project is on the cutting edge of science and technology with conservation objectives for humanity!

This is a milkwood tree. Thili from our research team couldn't help giving it a quick hug while assessing invasive plant regrowth in the area.
