How to Spot Southern Right Whales

Experience the thrill of spotting southern right whales along the Overberg coastline in South Africa. Whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or a curious first-timer, seeing these gentle giants will leave a lasting impression.

Here’s how you can improve your chances of seeing these incredible mammals.

Best Time to Spot Southern Right Whales

The prime time for whale watching is June to November. During these months, southern right whales migrate to the Southern African coastline from Antarctica to mate and calve, providing spectacular opportunities for sightings.

Where to See SR Whales

About an hour and a half from Cape Town International Airport, the Walker Bay area is a magnet for whales and whale watchers alike.

There are three key locations for sightings:

Walker Bay

This sheltered bay is one of the most renowned whale-watching spots on the planet. Whales adore the bay’s subtropical waters and basin depth. Uninterrupted clifftop views and easy access provide an excellent vantage point to see these gentle giants up close.

Hermanus

The town loves whales so much that they have employed an official whale crier who uses a kelp trumpet to belt out a series of powerful “toots” each time he spots a whale from his sentry points above the bay. That fanfare combined with the busy town centre’s many restaurants and art galleries, will appeal to those who enjoy touristy action. Traditionally, a whale festival is held at the beginning of October to celebrate their return each year.

De Kelders

About a half-hour drive from Hermanus, De Kelders offers stunning clifftop views over Walker Bay, where whales are often near the shore. It could be the closest you can get to a whale without approaching them with a boat. For those enjoying peace and tranquillity, this quiet coastal neighbourhood is the perfect place to spend a few days of uninterrupted whale watching without the usual tourist crowns.

Southern Right Whale Spotting Tips

With whale season gaining momentum, you will want the best chance of spotting these magnificent creatures. By using the following tips, you will be a seasoned whale spotter from the start:

Look for Blow Spouts

Whales surface to breathe, creating a distinctive V-shaped spout of water vapour. Keep an eye on the horizon for these telltale plumes.

Watch for Tail Slaps and Breaches

Southern right whales are known for their acrobatic displays, which include spectacular aquatic somersaults. A large splash can indicate a whale breaching or slapping its tail on the water.

Binoculars and Camera

While whales are naturally curious and many come close to shore to view humans, binoculars can help you spot them from a distance. If you love photography, a camera with a zoom lens will help you capture these memorable moments.

Patience and Timing

Some say early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times for whale watching, while others say lunchtime. If you want the full experience, setting aside a few days for this bucket-list experience means you are always there when the whales are, even at night when they can be heard communicating with each other.

Guided Tours and Ocean Safaris

If you are pressed for time, keen on adventure or want to see things from a different angle, consider going on an ocean safari. Local tour guides know the best spots and can provide valuable insights about whales and their behaviour.

Conservation and Respect

Remember, southern right whales are a protected species. Always maintain a respectful distance to avoid disturbing them. Follow local guidelines and regulations to ensure these gentle giants continue to grace the ocean shores for future generations.
