Southern Right Whales
Southern Right Whales are curious by nature, sometimes coming all the way up to us to get a closer look!
These whales have traveled all the way from Sub Antarctica to the coast of South Africa to mate and calf in our sheltered bays. These whales come right up to boats, but they will also go very close to shore, so much so that the area is considered to be one of the best land-based whale watching spots in the world!
This is also in part, how they got their name the "Right" whale, as their close proximity to shore made them easy game for whalers, who considered them the right whales to catch. Luckily, these whales are now a protected species and have recovered to 20% of their pre-whaling numbers.
