Events in Gansbaai

Small towns are reliant on themselves for entertainment which means more events and everybody gets involved. Gansbaai is no exception, keeping it as wild and fresh as the surrounding nature. In true South African fashion this little fishermans village is always looking for an excuse to celebrate - from wine tasting to a good harvest and they all have one thing in common… you’re invited!

The festivals and farm markets here are earthy and filled with country goodness. Because Gansbaai likes to keep its events original, the products and artists are sourced from the area and provide pure home grown goodness.

Indulge in the numerous arts and crafts markets happening all over Gansbaai, Stanford, and Hermanus year round. Especially the popular Christmas Market that signals the start of the festivities. During the year you can just keep your ear to the ground for news on weekly happenings and club meetings.

Not satisfied with your knowledge about the area, join the Hiking Club. This small group of nature lovers meet every month to share and discover the wonders of nature in the Overberg. Alternatively catch informative talks about the hidden history of Gansbaai from time to time.

Next up is the Kreef (Lobster) Derby. If you’ve cottoned on to the taste of fresh seafood then this is the event for you. It’s the perfect excuse to feast on copious amounts of freshly caught and prepared lobster, abalone, calamari and locally caught fish. Combined with live local music and South African hospitality it will be an evening you and the family will never forget.

True to its name Great White Capital of the world the Gansbaai Fees van die Haaie (Festival of the Shark) is a J’AWESOME celebration. It’s a vibrant music festival with entertainment for the whole family, including stalls, a playground for the kids, wine and beer tents and endless live entertainment. On the menu you can find freshly made traditional dishes ready to go for the party-goer on the move.

The laidback socializer can join the Wine Tasting Guild at the end of every month in visiting nearby wine farms and vineyards. Spoil yourself by treating your pallet to the aromas and subtle flavours of award-winning South African wines. Best served at sunset.

After all the festivities of the year it’s time to get serious and tackle one of the many sporting events on the Calendar. The Danger Point ½ Marathon takes you through a challenging yet beautiful 21 km of rough natural terrain. Biking enthusiasts can brave one of the toughest known mountain biking competitions which starts at Danger Point. The Lighthouse to Lighthouse Mountain Bike Ride is a full 2-day adventure which consists of around 180km’s and takes you all the way to Cape Agulhas and back. Otherwise opt for the 1-way 1-day expedition for a slightly smaller fee.

Small though it might be, the festivities and operations of Gansbaai will keep you on your toes all year. So make sure you make space in your schedule, because “jy maak vir Gansbaai LEKKER!”
