Built on an elevated stretch of indigenous coastal fynbos and overlooking the sea in the picturesque Kleinbaai residential area, the Gansbaai Golf Club is the most southern course in all of Africa. With panoramic sea views, an abundance of exquisite fynbos and wildlife, the 18-hole course and club sits right near the shark cage diving boats and is considered one of the most scenic - and challenging - courses in the country.
What began as a 9-hole course built in 1985 soon expanded into 18-holes and a squash court built adjunct to the clubhouse. This is one golf course where nature still calls the shots, from the fierce Kiewiets protecting their nests to the formidable Southeaster wind, this course is a must for those who are up for some novel obstacles and a good challenge.
As you make your way through the course either by foot or cart, watch out for the free roaming tortoises, buck snakes and impressive birdlife that bring welcome obstacles and a sense of wild wonder to your game.
Despite its obstacles, the club still lures sportsman off other fields, such as famous former Springbok rugby players. It’s also no wonder that many of the clubs 362 permanent members are foreigners who flock to the area each year in order to escape the icy European winter and work on their handicaps.
Rising early in your morning to crack your first ball opens up the afternoon for some real r&r, whether enjoyed back at your Gansbaai holiday accommodation or drinks with your fellow golfers at the clubhouse. The comfortable clubhouse has a cash bar and outdoor braai-area and makes a popular spot for social gatherings for members and visitors alike. The spacious hall is also a favourite venue for dance parties and other social events.
The golf club is fully kitted out with putting greens to build confidence of your short game, a pro shop to update your gear and even pro golfers to help you with your swing. Those who are in the mood for a breezier game can opt to play a 9-hole course instead.
