Boeke vir die betuiging van meegevoel en boodskappe aan oud-president Nelson Mandela is deur Gansbaai Munisipaliteit tot al drie gemeenskappe beskikbaar gestel. In Gansbaai-dorp is die boek in Gansbaai AGS-Kerk geplaas en in Masakhane en Blompark in hulle onderskeie gemeenskapsale. ‘n Groot geraamde foto van wyle Mandela, asook ‘n groot brandende kers is langs die boek geplaas. Etlike boodskappe was teen Dinsdag, 10 Desember reeds in die onderskeie boeke geskryf. Oorkoepelend verwys bykans al die boodskappe na die nastrewenswaardige voorbeeld wat hy aan alle Suid-Afrikaners gestel het, met etlike dankbetuigings vir wat hy nie net vir Suid-Afrika nie, maar ook vir die wêreld beteken het.

In Gansbaai is daar sedert 2009 jaarliks met oorgawe aan die viering van “Mandela-dag” op 18 Julie deelgeneem.

Jaarliks het ‘n groot hoeveelheid instansies, organisasies en skole “Mandela-dag” gevier en enorme bydraes tot gemeenskapsdiens gelewer.

Die dag is ingestel om gehoor te gee aan Mandela se oproep om 67 minute aan naastediens af te staan. Veral Gansbaai Munisipaliteit het ‘n reuse taak in hierdie verband verrig deur die gratis verwydering van groot hoeveelhede rommel in al drie die gemeenskappe.

Mandela is op 18 Julie 1918 in Suid-Afrika gebore. Hy was ‘n anti-apartheidsaktivis en het 27 jaar in die gevangenis deurgebring op grond van sabotasie-aanklagte. Hy wen die eerste volle demokratiese verkiesing in Suid-Afrika in 1994 en dien as Staatspresident tot 1999. Slegs drie van sy vele wyse uitlatings word hiermee aangehaal: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”; “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”; “Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.”
