Wildlife Wonders at Grootbos

Nature never stops surprising us!

Our Reserve Manager, Mike Fabricius, recently spotted a rhombic skaapsteker displaying unusual behaviour, flattening its neck much like a cobra! While harmless to humans, this little snake certainly knows how to put on a show when it feels threatened.

Next up, a striking male boomslang caught our attention. His darker colouring sets him apart from the female, and with his exceptional eyesight, he’s perfectly equipped for both hunting and spotting danger.

Lastly, one of our Conservation Team members came across a tortoise with two ticks on its shell. We learnt that there is circulation between the shell and bone, meaning ticks can access the blood system between the scutes (the tortoise’s scales).

Every encounter reminds us how intricate and fascinating nature truly is.
