High up in the forest canopy at Grootbos, you might spot Usnea, also known as Old Man’s Beard. This fascinating lichen drapes gracefully from the branches of Milkwood and Afromontane forest trees.
Beyond its beauty, Usnea holds remarkable healing properties. It produces usnic acid, a natural compound with antibacterial and antifungal benefits. Traditionally, it was used to dress wounds and even as a natural wool dye.
Nature continues to inspire and heal - one delicate strand at a time.
