Nature’s Tiny Gladiators
Our first fabulous tidbit this week revisits the image of Gladiators in miniature.
This photo is of a flower crab spider and a sweat bee on a fragrant orchid known as a Pterygodium catholicum.
Halictidae are a large and diverse family of 'sweat bees' often attracted to perspiration on animals.
Flower crab spiders belong to the genus Thomisus and they are able to change colour to match the flowers they hunt from. They lie in wait, perfectly camouflaged to ambush unsuspecting pollinators like this sweat bee that was going about its business in search of nectar.
