The Camouflaging Flower Crab Spider

Nature is full of remarkable disguises! Flower crab spiders (Thomisus sp.) are masters of camouflage, able to slowly change their colour over 1–2 days to perfectly match the flower they sit on.

Once their transformation is complete, these tiny ambush predators wait patiently on a flower head, using their powerful front legs to capture unsuspecting insects that come to visit.

This fascinating crab spider was spotted on the endangered endemic plant Cyrtanthus leucanthus, which emerged in the burnt areas of the reserve shortly after the fire, a beautiful reminder of nature’s resilience.

Even the smallest creatures play an important role in the fynbos ecosystem.
