Rocks, Wildlife and Youth Conservation

After the recent wildfire in the region, the exposed fynbos landscape is perfect for conducting geology surveys. This is Dr Hayley Cawthra on the Grootbos Reserve doing what she does best, which is reading the rocks, earth and shape of the land to make sense of its natural history. Hayley Cawthra is a Specialist Scientist at the Council for Geoscience in Cape Town and Research Associate at the African Centre for Coastal Palaeoscience (Nelson Mandela University), where she supervises postgraduate students. She holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town, carried out a post-doctoral fellowship in Bremen, Germany, and has 19 years of working experience in coastal and marine geology. Her research mostly involves sea-level history, landscape evolution, and reconstructing now-drowned offshore environments.

Coach Danver accompanied the Butterfly Centre youth on their excursion to the African Seabird and Penguin Sanctuary in Gansbaai this week. Learning about our natural surroundings and how to protect animals teaches youth how to care for their environment.
