Grootbos Foundation Youth Sports and Training

Athletics and cross country training took place at Groeneweide Nursery and farm outside Franskraal this week for a change of scenery from the Gansbaai sports field. It is true that a change is as good as a holiday even if all it took was moving the training session to a new space just for a day!

Grootbos Foundation coaches offer a 4 week HIV/Aids awareness programme developed by Grassroots Soccer for 12 year olds. They deliver this programme in local primary schools. This week the theme at Masakhane Primary was being aware of the risk of exposure to the HIVirus and how to take care of oneself. The games and discussion use sports terminology in order to help the message land in a memorable way among young people.

Hockey is a fun sport for those children seeking to try out new things, learn new skills and play together in a team. Over the last 3 weeks, some of our hockey players have participated in a friendly summer league in Hermanus which has led to a swell in interest among new players keen for the opportunity to learn how to play the sport that took kids to such a fun and vibrant tournament. This is just another sports code that attracts young people to Spaces4Sport after school in the afternoons.
