Die Birkenhead Boothengel-klub het op 11 Oktober 2014 die “King of the Bay” Boot-hengelkompetisie aangebied en ook as gasheerklub opgetree. Dié klub was ook die trotse wenner van die pragtige King of the Bay Wisseltrofee. “Die Bestuur van die Birkenhead Boothengelklub het reeds vroeg in 2014 besluit om jaarliks ‘n ‘King of the Bay’ Boothengel- kompetisie aan te bied,” sê Philip Fourie, voorsitter. Hy sê die gedagte was om ‘n prestige wisseltrofee te ontwerp en dat die drie bootklubs rondom Walkerbaai, naamlik Overberg, Birkenhead en Walker Bay (Hermanus) jaarliks om die trofee moet wedywer.

“Behalwe vir die opwinding wat met so ‘n kompetisie gepaardgaan, is beoog om die onderskeie visvanglede mekaar beter te laat leer ken en sommer net om ‘n heerlike visvangdag te hê.” Hyself en sy eggenote, Lorraine, was deur die Cape Horn gedenkteken se ontwerp, wat ‘n albatross uitbeeld, geïnspireer en het besluit om ‘n trofee wat ‘n Malgas (Gannet) vertoon, te ontwerp. “Met kundige insette en harde werk deur die bekwame en handige Herman Taljaard en staalsnywerk deur Laser Cut in Kaapstad, was die trofee betyds vir die eerste King of the Bay Boothengelkompetisie.” Philip en Lorraine, eienaars van Gannet Financial Services, is die borg vir die trofee, wat nou trots in die Birkenhead Boothengelklub vir die volgende jaar gehuisves word.

Drie Boothengelklubs het deelgeneem, met 6 bote wat ingeweeg het: Birkenhead Boothengelklub (gasheer met 3 bote - 6.6kg gemiddeld), Overberg Boothengelklub (1 boot - 5.98kg gemiddeld) en Walkerbaai Boothengelklub (Hermanus, met 2 bote - 2.7 gemiddeld).         

Die wenners vir die dag was: King of the Bay Trofee - Birkenhead Boothengelklub (6.6kg gemiddelde vismassa); swaarste vis (geelbek 5.55kg), met ‘n prys geborg deur Dyer Island Cruises vir ‘n haaibootrit vir 2 - Lulof Doyer; 2de swaarste vis (geelbek 5.45kg) - Johan Burmeister; 3de swaarste vis (geelbek 5.35kg) - Lulof Doyer; swaarste sak (18.4kg) - Lulof Doyer; 2de swaarste sak (17.05kg) - Johan Burmeister; swaarste boot (43.05kg) - Nu-Nu van Johan Burmeister; 2de swaarste boot (11.95kg) - Lally van Stephen Aslin.
