The annual Overstrand Sport Festival took place on Saturday, 1 November 2014 at Mt Pleasant Sport Ground was once again something to talk about in the area. Weather on the day was beautiful and later become bit windy but that did not affect any of the sporting codes playing on the day.
The event started off with a welcome note from the ward councillor Leandra Beyers-Cronje who wished everybody including dignities present an exciting day. The Executive Mayor Clr Nicolette Botha-Guthrie officially opened the event, in her touching speech the Mayor requested everybody to observe a moment of silent for the three South African Sports personalities who tragically passed away few days before the Overstrand Sport Festival. Senzo Meyiwa (Bafana Bafana Captain) was shot dead in an alleged robbery after a match against Ajax Cape Town, Mbulaeli Mulaudzi (800 metres gold medallist) who was killed in a car crash and Ms Phindile Mwelase suffered a blow in a boxing bout against Liz Butler. The Mayor paid tribute to these great sport perso-nalities for their contribution in Sport and encourage youth to be actively involved in sport.
The day started off with the send-off by Executive Mayor and Deputy Mayor Clr Rudolph Smith of 24 young cyclists (both girls and boys) from Lukhanyo Primary School for an exhibition race. Few minutes after the handover of medals to the young cyclists who are coached by Mr. Johan Duplessis (English teacher at Lukhanyo).
The results of the day were as follows: Hawston Crickect Club defeated Mt Pleasant cricket Club to retain their title. Mt Pleasant batted first and they scored 53 runs on 20 overs and Hawston reached the target on 15th Over.
Sports that were played on the day include Dominoes about Thirteen (13) domino teams made it through to the domino finals on Saturday to compete for the trophy. The teams were: Eagles, Stormers, Sardyns, Dolfyns, Whales, Cool Cats, Try-Again, Skrik vir Niks, JJ Girls, Perseverance, Fishers, Black and Mombaza Tom and Jerry. Team effort and Perseverance resulted to: Cilliers (Oupa) Ponane en Johanna (Hannetjie) Januarie, walking walked away with the trophy. Sardyns: Andy Brown en Freddie Minnaar, was runners-up.
In soccer Siyadlala ladies beat the visitors 2-0 to clinch the trophy and in men’s finals both teams from Gansbaai, a youthful side The Guys FC beat Peace Makers 2-1. In netball Hangklip Netball Club beat Kamvalethu by 31 -16 to claim the 3rd Spot. On the netball final Hermanus Netbal Club beat the host Mt Pleasant Netball Club by 34-22 to retain their trophy for three consecutive years.
In rugby news Atlantic Rugby Club defeated their neighbours Black birds by 17-15 to be crowned 2014 Overstrand Sport festival Champions. Wandisile Konkxana (The Guys FC) became the best player in Men’s Soccer Final, Ndiphile Ntlana(Siyadlala Ladies) became the Best Player in ladies soccer, Bianca Le Roux (Hermanus Netball Club)best player in netball, Ryno Swartz (Hawston cricket Club) best player in cricket and Brandon Jullies (Atlantic Rugby Club)best player in rugby.
There was also softball exhibition match conducted by Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports.
