Skipbreuke langs die Strandveldse Kus

Skipbreuke langs die Strandveldse Kus

GansbaaiCourant WhatsApp Nuus / News

Die inligting uit Shipwrecks of the Southern Cape Compiled by J. Rawe & Crabtree.

Accounts of shipping disasters during the late stormy weather still continue to come in.

Fortunately the one reported in the following telegram is not so sad as that reported by the Drummond Castle last Tuesday morning –

“From the Civil Comissioner of Caledon to Collector of Customs, Cape Town:-

Norwegian ship Ellida wrecked, Danger Point. Captain Kristofferson; all hands saved. Bound from New York to Port Elizabeth. Ship likely to break up tonight. Cargo, general.”

The Ellida is a bark of 300 tons and cleared at New York on th 4th April last. The above telegram was posted up as the Commercial Exchange yesterday morning)

Die museum antwoord (2 April 1993) o.a soos volg:

“We are afraid you gave us more information than we can return!

Elida was a barque built at Grimstad in 1885. She measured 309 tons. Owner Johan D. Havestadt, captain Th. Kristoffersen. Homeport Grimstad.”
