Dit is vanjaar die 5de “Waggelstap”-stap (Waddling) ter ondersteuning van die Afrika pikkewyn, wat elke jaar in Gansbaai begin. Op Maandag, 13 April 2015 het die 16 dapperstappers om 09:00 by die African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Kleinbaai begin.
Soos gebruiklik het enkele entoesiastiese ondersteuners tot buite Gansbaai saamgestap. By die dorp se ingang het die groep voor die nuwe embleemteken, Gansbaai - Home of the Marine Big 5, afskeid geneem en amptelik met hul waggelende staptog (±125km en 31 ure se stap) na Simonstad begin, waar hulle op Saterdag, 18 April 2015 sal eindig.
Die staptog gaan gepaard met plakkate wat lui: “hoot for penguins” en Gansbaaiers het goed saamgewerk met hul toeters. Die Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week het in 2011 as ‘n inisiatief van die Animal Keepers Association of Africa begin, maar het intussen uitgebrei om voorsiening vir onderteuners hiervan landswyd te lok. The endangered African penguin is only found along the Southern African coastline. They occur nowhere else in the world. Their distribution stretches from Namibia in the west, to Algoa Bay in the east.
These enigmatic birds face extinction in the wild as their numbers continue to decline dramatically. Loss of food source due to overfishing, climate change and habitat destruction are just some of the factors taking their toll. Most important to recognise is that the Penguin Promises campaign will always focus on awareness, versus fundraising, therefore their slogan “We don’t want you money honey we want your love”. It is generally felt that when people donate money to a cause they very often feel momentarily better about themselves and then walk away perhaps not really knowing or caring what happens to the money or species thereafter.
Natuurliefhebbers kan betrokke raak deur ‘n eenvoudige belofte te maak oor wat hulle vir omgewingsbewaring, en dan veral vir die Afrika pikkewyn, kan doen.
