Lomond is celebrating after receiving the prestigious International Trophy for Red Rhone Varietals at the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards in London.
The winning wine was the Single vineyard Syrah called Cats Tail from the 2012 vintage.
This year’s awards saw 35 International trophies awarded from a total of 15,929 wines tasted at the beginning of the judging process. These included only five from South Africa, eight from France, six from Australia and four from Spain.
According to the judges, the Cats Tail Syrah is an “exquisite, appetizing cool climate Syrah with alluring aromas of bay leaf, liquorice, oak spice, rounded off with black fruit notes. The palate has spice, with wonderfully integrated, grippy tannins and admirable length driven by fresh fruit and perky acidity.”
Each of the Lomond single vineyard wines are named after particular “fynbos” species that grow on the farm. The Cats Tail Syrah is named after the Bulbinella nutans.
Situated in the Uilkraalsriver Valley, Lomond is one of only a handful of wine farms within the Cape Agulhas appellation of origin.
Wayne Gabb executive director says: "It is a great team effort and extremely rewarding to win an International trophy for a red wine as the single vineyard Pincushion sauvignon blanc won an International trophy at Decanter in 2007."
