Zonkie, wie se ma ‘n donkie en pa ‘n zebra is, is op 4 Januarie vanjaar gebore. Sy koms was geensins beplan nie. So ‘n kruising staan gewoonlik as ‘n zebroid bekend. Die vroegste aantekening van dié verskynsel is in 1810 in Edinburg, Skotland gemaak toe ‘n perd en ‘n kwagga aangeteel het. Zonkie het groot opwinding op die Oos-Kaapse plaas van Ranya Fourie, SARIE-kos-assistant, se ouers veroorsaak. Haar pa, Bernhardt Pöhl van Marble Hall het foto’s van kleine Zonkie met die “donkie-lyfkleur” en die “zebra-streepbeentjies” geneem.
