The great white sharks are known as the Kings of the Seas.

In honour of the legendary predator that Marine Dynamics has the privilege of working with every day, Wilfred Chivell commissioned an artwork to preside over Kleinbaai harbour.

The mythical king of the sea, Poseidon, seemed a perfect fit with the sharks, and artist Jenna Harris combined the two to create a stunning visual that will create photographic opportunities for residents and visitors.

The artwork was officially unveiled on the 15th April by Deputy Mayor of the Overstrand, Dudley Coetzee, and the moment shared with the public.

“I want the people of Gansbaai to enjoy this artwork and the stunning backgrounds that can be achieved. The Hermanus cliff path artworks provided inspiration and I wanted to create something similar for our area,” said Wilfred Chivell.

Artist, Jenna Harris,  is Durban born and is in her final year articles at Deloitte to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.  She has a love for art, in particular painting and drawing, inspired by her mother who is a professional artist. Passionate about the ocean, Harris was happy to work on this project. Harris also created the poetry on the plaque that reads: ‘Mindful of these great white soldiers, I can hear the ocean’s plight. This, one of the last safe havens, A kingdom of light.’

Valuable research

More about Marine Dynamics: Marine Dynamic Tours is  a shark cage diving company operational since 2005 and Dyer Island Cruises is a whale watching company operational since 2000. Both conduct and support valuable research, conservation and education. These two award winning companies hold Fair Trade Tourism certification (since 2008) and employ marine biologists whose research is in turn supported through the Dyer Conservation Trust. The Dyer Island Conservation Trust was founded in 2006 by company owner, Wilfred Chivell.

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust delivers unique conservation and research programmes in the fragile and critically important marine eco-system  at the southern-most tip of Africa. Here they strive to protect the largest surviving colonies of the endangered African Penguin whose numbers are at an all-time low; the glo-bally important breeding and calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale; and, the world's densest populations of the vulnerable Great White Shark. The companies believe that YOUR CHOICE MAKES A DIFFERENCE and support the Trust financially and logistically.
