DEEP Beach Clean- up

DEEP Beach Clean- up

Dyer Island Conservation Trust

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust Environmental Education Program (DEEP) joined together over the weekend for a beach clean-up. The month of September celebrates International Coastal Clean-up day, but at the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) it is our mission to keep our environment clean and protect our green heritage. We grab every opportunity we can to get our hands on some data sheets, garbage bags and hit the beaches of Gansbaai.

On Saturday the group tackled the Uilenkraasmond estuary. Routinely they cover a distance of 2 km. This time they collected a total of 24,13kg trash over a distance of 100m.

Pinkey, DICT Manager made use of the amazing “Clean Swell” mobile app from Ocean Conservancy to keep track of the trash the groups were collecting. This is a great alternative to the usual paper data sheets, plus the collected data gets  captured in real time by the Ocean Conservancy.

We would also like to thank the Department of Environmental Affairs for sponsering sling bags, disposable gloves ans well as a scrumptious lunch for the group.

We have registered  our  event for the International Coastal Clean-up day on 16 September. This is a public effort and you are most welcome to join us. Check out our Facebook Events page for more details.
