BARC Animal Welfare September 2022 Newsletter

Dear friends,

There are so many well-doers out there, we thank you for all that you contribute, money, donations, your time, adoptions and many smaller tokens. We survive because of all the goodwill of our patrons. Bless you. A letter was posted to you in July and we have a follow-up to that letter on the next page. Gansbaai has always been known as a caring community, let us see what we can accomplish together. Thank you.

Adopt a Kitten Initiative

Two local ladies, Louise Higham and Marietjie Barkhuizen adore cats and started a lovely initiative. They designed a brochure to express their gratitude for anyone adopting a kitten from BARC. They are contributing a gift parcel of appreciation for every kitten adopted and hope to help create a happy home for the new furry pet. They designed and printed this lovely brochure (left) which is available at BARC. Their gift parcels are gifts for the kittens, ranging from toys to other spoils to help make the kitty feel at home, happy and entertained when they are adopted. BARC thanks them for their lovely idea and for their kitten caring.

BARC and Current Situation

A letter was sent in July to everyone on the BARC newsletter emailing list explaining the current situation at BARC. We suggest that you copy and paste this letter into "Google translate‟ to the language of your choice.

It was Ghandi who once said, “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” The plight of pets is not just the responsibility of BARC, it is the responsibility of every citizen. One could educate those that you are in contact with about uncurbed breeding and create awareness about dogs tied up in backyards without proper care. Let us all take hands and become part of the solution for uncared and unloved pets. It is a privilege to own a pet and certainly not a disposable item (except in worst-case personal circumstances, consider making arrangements for your pets if anything should happen to you).

BARC is putting up a fight to not become another statistic of an animal rescue centre that did not survive. Can you imagine if no one in Gansbaai is responsible for neglected, abandoned and/or lost dogs and cats?

The above-mentioned letter spelt out BARC‟s current situation. You are welcome to send us fresh practical ideas of how to help BARC survive. We are hoping to turn the situation around with your help. Here is the response letter that was sent out to everyone a few days ago:

”..We would like to thank all those persons who responded to BARC’S plea for assistance when we requested financial support through a letter sent out in July.

Since the letter was sent, the financial situation has unfortunately not changed for the better. We are therefore still dependent on a monthly contribution. We are making a serious appeal to animal lovers to make a financial contribution, as mentioned in the letter, even R100 each month will help us a lot.

A huge thank you from the BARC volunteer group.”

Support BARC Golf Day on 5 November 2022!

The BARC (Birkenhead Animal Rescue Centre) annual Golf Day has become one of the highlights of the Gansbaai Golf Calendar year. This Golf Day has become such a popular event that it draws players from far and wide. This year the 7th annual Golf Day will be no exception. Annalie Jonker from BARC hopes to have a bumper day this year and is thankful to Gansbaai Golf Club for their assistance. The aim of the golf day is to generate funding for the sterilization of pets belonging to lower-income owners. It is an ongoing battle to stop the multiplication of puppies and kittens and the only possible solution is through sterilization.

BARC will once again pull out all the stops to find donors for amazing prizes, and as in the past, some wonderful items will be up for auction. What makes this golf day so exceptional is that every player receives a generous prize, no mean feat. So spread the news of this not to be missed golf day, be part of the fun, sponsor a hole, or contribute a prize... all this for a very good cause. For more information contact Elsabe at 0829227063.

EVERITTE VISSER RETIRES

It was with mixed feelings that we learnt of Everitt‘s retirement. He has been a great asset to BARC and will be sorely missed. Everitte worked at BARC for the past 4 years. He recently turned 60 and reckons that he does not have the energy anymore to fulfil his job. Everitte was employed in 2018 and soon showed he had a special way with dogs. He could pacify even aggressive dogs with his patience and good handling.

Everitte was a handyman of note and helped out with repair work and general maintenance at BARC. Everitte is married to Lynette and they have 2 sons, Ricardo and Franco. Franco is often seen at the kennels enthusiastically helping out. He also does daily walks with the dogs, a paid initiative of Birgit Welke, a well-known BARC animal lover from Germany. We thank you for all you have done for BARC Everitte; we wish you well and hope that you enjoy a healthy retirement period to spend with your loved ones.

Play with the Dogs

BARC kennel hours are from 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00. Even if you are not planning to adopt a pet, there is much joy in playing with a dog in their special play area, something your kids will enjoy.

BARC Lodgings and Shop

Remember to book your dog/s accommodation in good time for your holiday. Phone BARC during office hours at 083 742 3903. The costs are R80 per day for the first dog and every additional dog after that costs R40. This includes full boarding with food. If your pet has special dietary needs you can bring your own dog food. Your dog will be well looked after and you can fetch your dog daily for exercise if you are staying in an accommodation that does not allow pet/s.

BARC Second Hand Shop

The shop first opened its doors on 22 August 2009. The two friendly assistants in the shop are Lydia and Rene. The shop stocks amongst others, clothing, shoes and ornaments. Do come and browse, you will be surprised. The shop is in need of bedding, towels, curtains, also second-hand furniture. Nols could pick up and transport the donated furniture. These mentioned items sell very well.

Any donation for BARC could be dropped off there during business hours. Open 8:30 to 17:00 weekdays and Saturday 8:30 to 11:00. Situated in the C Sig building corner of Dirkie Uys and Market Street.
