NEWS: Know Where You're Going
With the end of the year creeping closer, it draws us closer to that time of the year when you start thinking about the year gone by. Did you challenge yourself to do something daring, did you succeed in your job, did you tell that someone special how you feel?
As the saying goes, You can never know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been. Being creatures of habit, we often repeat history. And so we take a look back at what happened in history on this very day: 22 November.

One the most well-known stories of history that shocked the world occurred on this seemingly average day. On this very day in 1574 the Juan Fernandez Islands off the coast of Chile were discovered and in 1842 Mount St Helen’s erupted in Washington. In 1906 the International Radio Telecommunications Com adopts “SOS” as the new call for help. And of course, an historical event that will never be forgotten and remains unresolved to many, American President John F. Kennedy is assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. In the science world, this day marks the isolation of a single gene announced by scientists at Harvard University.
If you are lucky to celebrate your birthday today, you share it with English novelist, Mary Anne Evans (better known by her pen name George Eliot) (1819), the man who brought us the Chevy Corvette, Harley J. Earl (1893), tennis star, Boris Becker (1967), the late Rodney Dangerfield (1921) and actress Scarlett Johanssen.
