Grootbos Fire Update
The view at Grootbos shows a clear outline of where the fire moved towards the Walker Bay area and onto the reserve. One can see how the flames swept across roughly 400 hectares of the 4000-hectare property, reaching close to some of the lodge’s infrastructure. Thankfully, the damage was limited, with only a part of the stables affected, which will be repaired in the coming weeks.
Despite the fire’s path, guest operations continued safely, and all staff and visitors were protected throughout. The immense support and messages from the local and international community have been greatly appreciated.
While the fire was a big scare, the landscape now shows the resilience of the fynbos, which is expected to recover and thrive in the coming months. A huge thank you goes to all the teams and neighbours who assisted, as well as the Overstrand and Overberg fire departments, the Greater Overberg FPA, and the NCC teams who helped on site.
